Can You Believe We Get to Do This? HONOR IS OUR LANGUAGE
We recently launched the series Can You Believe We Get to Do This?, highlighting the culture we are creating—a way of life centered on Jesus that shapes how we love, serve, and engage with the world. One of the core values explored in this series is honor.
Culture Is What You Experience
Culture isn’t just what we do; it’s the atmosphere people feel when they’re around us. Every family, every community has a culture. Some are warm and inviting; some are tense or rigid. At the heart of the culture we are building, Jesus is the foundation, and honor is the language that sustains it.
Romans 12:9-10 reminds us:
"Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil. Cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves. Outdo one another in showing honor."
Honor isn’t reserved for leaders, famous people, or those who “deserve it.” In the kingdom of God, honor flows in all directions—to everyone, everywhere, regardless of status or ability.
Stories of Honor from Scripture
The Bible gives us vivid examples of honor in action:
David and Jonathan: Even when trust could have been broken by jealousy or fear, their friendship thrived because honor shaped their interactions.
David and Mphibichef: Jonathan’s son, Mphibichef, was disabled and overlooked. David went to find him, restored his inheritance, and invited him to the king’s table. Honor wasn’t just a gesture—it transformed Mphibichef from the inside out.
These stories remind us that honor doesn’t depend on worthiness—it reflects heaven. When we honor others as God has honored us, it changes the way they see themselves and experience the world.
Honor in Everyday Life
In our daily lives, honor looks like:
Speaking with kindness and grace, even when it’s hard
Choosing to forgive rather than retaliate
Extending respect and care to those who are overlooked or marginalized
This approach is countercultural. Gossip, slander, and revenge are common in the world around us, but in a culture of honor, our conversations and actions point to heaven. Honor isn’t weakness—it’s strength. It’s a fight worth taking on because it nurtures transformation in people, relationships, and communities.
A Culture That Transforms
When we live out honor in all directions, we create an environment where people:
Feel seen and valued
Encounter grace in tangible ways
Begin to experience Jesus’ love and the reality of His kingdom
Honor is not just a value; it’s a lifestyle. It flows from Jesus, shaping everything we do. By committing to honor others, we demonstrate that we belong to a kingdom that is upside-down and radically different from the world.
