STEP FIVE: BUILD

BY PASTOR JADY GRIFFIN

WHAT DO YOU CRAVE?

Have you ever found yourself so focused on the present that you forget to consider the future? Sometimes we can't see what we're building until it's over. This Old Testament story demonstrates the importance of looking beyond our immediate desires and embracing our spiritual birthright as followers of Jesus.

In Genesis 25:19-34, we read of Jacob and Esau, two brothers who were destined for greatness, but one of them made a costly mistake. Esau, in a moment of hunger, traded his birthright for a bowl of soup. This decision had lasting consequences, as Esau later realized the full impact of what he had given up. He had focused on his present craving instead of recognizing the long-term implications of his actions.

This story resonates with us today because our cravings can also cost us dearly. Whether it's giving in to temptations or failing to address our bitterness, when we give in to these desires, we risk selling our spiritual birthright for temporary satisfaction.

As Christians, our birthright is found in Jesus. Ephesians 1:3-5 tells us that we have been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ and have been adopted into God's family. This means that we have access to all that Jesus is and all that He desired for us: salvation, healing, and the establishment of the Kingdom of Heaven on earth!

So how can we avoid falling into the same trap as Esau? By shifting our focus from our temptations to the kingdom of God. When we live our lives with the understanding that what we're building is bigger than what we can see, our cravings will fade in the shadow of our birthright.

TINY PIECES MAKE BIG IMPACTS

You’ve probably played with LEGOs, as a kid or maybe even into adulthood! All those tiny bricks are just scattered pieces in a pile until you build.

To truly embrace our birthright, we must come together as the Church, like individual LEGO bricks building a beautiful masterpiece. When we take the steps to encounter Jesus, belong to a community, serve, and grow, we not only strengthen ourselves but also contribute to the growth of the Church.

TAKE A STEP

Take a few minutes and think of a neighbor, co-worker, friend, or family member you want to invite to be a part of this journey with you. Not sure where to start? Follow the B.L.E.S.S. model, or BLESS Every Home, of five steps to love your neighbors.

You can also help to build the Church in Austin through giving. There are online options for automatic tithe, giving toward our Build the House building fund, or supporting Antioch Global. We are beyond grateful for your partnership!

Take a step toward building God's Kingdom together on earth, one brick at a time!
